Every country's cultural and natural heritage - from historical monuments to sites of geological or archaeological significance - tells a unique and enduring story of its past. Since 1972, over 170 countries have come together under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and signed a pledge, the "Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage", to protect the World Heritage sites in their territories and take joint responsibility as an international community to preserve these cultural and natural treasures for future generations. As at July 2003, the Mainland China has 29 sites on the World Heritage List.
